Happy Birthday, Mom

This is a picture of a bronze on the Walk in front of the Shrine of Freedom in Floral Haven Memorial Gardens cemetery in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.  My mom, Cathe, is depicted on it, along with flags and text memorializing the activity she dreamed up and organized annually where Boy Scouts come out on Memorial Day evening and retire the thousands of flags we flew over the weekend.

I guess they still do it.  I don’t know.  My family doesn’t own the cemetery any more.

May 28, 1949 was my mom’s birthday.  Oddly, she died on June 18, 2004 (my birthday).  We had been losing her for quite a long time.  Then she was unconscious for days and days.  It’s a wild coincidence she died on my birthday.

In the cemetery business, we definitely noticed the rise in deaths just after a holiday, especially Christmas.  I guess people look forward to seeing their families and their brains do what they can to hold out for a few more days.

Anyway….
