Fat Clothes, Show Some Respect

Kevin Smith in his fat clothes.

It seems to me that we need to show more respect to the people who can more efficiently store extra food in their bodies. Back in the times of feast-or-famine, they were the evolutionary super stars.

Imagine a tribe, way back when, that hunted for their food. A kill would bring in lots of meat that would go bad in just a few days or might be stolen any minute by packs of smaller animals. In that scenario, it’s the fat people who are dominant.

Ok, so you’re a lady of the tribe and it’s time to accept a mate (I have no idea if you had a choice in the matter, but we’re going to pretend you did). Are you going to accept the skinny little guy who can’t store enough of the food to survive until the next kill?

If you’re the larger man in the tribe, are you going to choose the skinny girl who won’t be healthy enough between kills to bare you many sons?

I think we need to remember that there are still parts of the world where it’s the fatter people who are the healthiest. Look up some writing about the people who live above the arctic circle.

I think you’ll find magazine articles that recount scientific evidence that slightly larger Americans are actually more healthy in the long run than skinny Americans.

And, you know, I’ve never met a person who’s own personal beauty wasn’t mostly based on what they transmit to my mind’s eye.  The ideas we collect about a person make them beautiful to us, and we collect those ideas by witnessing beautiful acts, not beautiful poses.

Show some respect.
